Locals Out Buying Supplies Ahead Of Next Week's Sub-Zero Forecast

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- People are bracing for the next round of winter weather.

With frigid conditions right now, and another winter blast predicted for the beginning of next week, workers at the Robinson Lowe's say there's been a whirlwind of Pittsburghers stocking up on necessities.

It's good news for Brent Kottner. He lives on Mount Washington, so traction is key.

"I do need some salt because I'm running out so quickly," Kottner said. "I use salt with the low temperatures. I don't know if it works when it gets cold, but I'm using a lot of it, and also, my light is constantly coming on for washer fluid."

When it comes to the right salt for a sub-zero degree forecast, the pros say your best bet is calcium chloride.

"It will work to minus 25 degrees, so on days like today, that's the best," Patrick Colalella, of Lowe's, says. "And if it gets cold, it doesn't freeze."

It's also lasts longer, is safe for pets and plants, and doesn't have the damaging effect rock salt has on cement.

"We're getting some cold weather in. We're gonna have rain on Sunday or Monday, and it's gonna freeze," Doug Spernak said. "I do some big driveways that have nice cement, so this doesn't hurt it and it should take care of the problem."
