Martin Brodeur Reflects On Career, Looks Forward To Tribute

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Martin Brodeur is expecting an emotional ceremony Tuesday night as his number is retired at the Prudential Center.

The Devils great is being honored before the team's game against the Edmonton Oilers. WFAN will carry the event beginning at 6:15 p.m.

"It will be emotional," Brodeur told WFAN's Mike Francesa on Tuesday afternoon. "I'm not sure exactly where that emotion's going to come from. Sometimes you get surprises on that."

Brodeur spent 21 seasons as the Devils' goalie. He retired as the NHL's all-time leader in wins with 691.

When asked what in his career he's most proud of, he said: "Winning three Stanley Cups. I got a chance to play in five different Finals, winning three of them, and especially winning two of them in New Jersey in front of our fans was probably the most special moment."

Despite spending a total of 22 years in the NHL -- the last with the St. Louis Blues -- Brodeur said it felt as though his career flew by.

"It's pretty quick," he said. "I think when you're in the middle of it, you don't realize, but I think the older you get, the closer to retirement you get, you kind of start maybe appreciating it a little bit more what you're doing. But again, I played for a long time. I just retired last season at 43 years old. It was a great career."

Today, Brodeur is trying to soak up all he can as the Blues' assistant general manager.

"It's new to me, and every day brings a different challenge, and like I said, it's nice because I don't have to make a decision," Brodeur said. "I just go in there, and I really learn and talk to Doug Armstrong, that's doing a great job as general manager there in St. Louis. And I'm going to be there for the next couple of years, and from there we'll see what's going to happen."
