Suffolk County SPCA: Dog Thrown From Pickup Truck Near Mastic Beach Post Office

MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Suffolk County SPCA is trying to find out who threw a dog from the window of a pickup truck.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday near the U.S. Post Office in Mastic Beach.

A witness said the 3- to 4-year-old pit bull mix was thrown from the driver's side passenger window of a dark colored 4-door pickup truck, the SPCA said.

"And when the dog hit the ground, the dog got up and started running toward the vehicle that threw it out of the window. Talk about how sad of a situation this was," Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

When the witness stopped to check on the dog, the pit bull jumped into the witnesses' vehicle, the SPCA said.

The dog was stressed and had suffered head trauma, Gross said.

"He was very shaken up, it has a two-inch puncture wound right over the eye that's fresh that we don't believe was caused by being dropped out of the vehicle," Gross told 1010 WINS.

The pit bull, which was wearing a black collar and is housebroken, also had healed scars on its face, indicating that it may have been used as a bait dog in dogfighting, Gross said.

The dog is under the care of a veterinarian.

The SPCA chief said the dog is very friendly and will be put up for adoption in the near future, Hall reported.

"This is a blatant act of animal cruelty and we will do everything we can to see that those responsible are apprehended," Gross said.

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Anyone with information can contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
