Study: Mass. Millennials Tops In Alcohol Spending, No. 2 In Coffee Shop Purchases

BOSTON (CBS) – Maybe this explains all that multi-tasking and short attention spans.

A new report on spending by millennials – those ages 18 to 35 – finds that Massachusetts millennials rank No. 1 nationally in spending on alcohol and No. 2 in spending on coffee.

The study by personal finance company Level Money examined spending by millennials on "guilty pleasures" such as coffee, liquor and fast food.

Bay State young adults are second to none when it comes bellying up to the bar or making runs to the package store. Second place for alcohol purchases goes to Colorado, followed by New York, Wyoming and Illinois.

With all that spending on wine, beer and liquor it's no surprise that Massachusetts millennials make a significant investment in caffeine pick-me-ups.

But Bay Staters aren't alone among New England young adults when it comes to a java jones. Maine ranks No. 1 in coffee shop purchases.

Young adults in the state spend an average of $277 per year in coffee shops, compared to only $47 per year spent in Mississippi, the bottom state for coffee shop purchases

And just behind Massachusetts young adults in the top five for coffee spending are New Hampshire, Connecticut and Washington state.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that the home states of Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts both make the top five for coffee shop purchases.
