Falling Granite Slabs Kill 2 Workers At San Francisco Construction Site

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Two workers were killed while moving large slabs of granite as they worked in a shipping container in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood Friday morning, a fire department spokeswoman said.

Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said they got a 911 call around 10:15 a.m. from Galaxy Granite Inc., a stone fabricator located at 1525 Cortland Avenue. According to Talmadge, about 10 slabs of rock had fallen on two employees as the slabs were being unloaded from a truck.

Talmadge said they got there within minutes and found one worker already deceased and a second worker was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Talmadge said that crews were able to remove the workers within five minutes.

According to Fire Battalion Chief Jack Cremins, the granite had to be broken in order to get to the men who were crushed.

The workers at the company were all very shaken up by the accident including Guillermo Arrund, who said the two men had worked with the company for four to five years.

Cal-OSHA was brought in to investigate the accident. According to their website, there were no previous accidents or violations at Galaxy Granite.
