Bears Sign LB Jerrell Freeman To 3-Year Deal

By Chris Emma--

(CBS) The Bears have solidified their linebacker position with the additions of free-agent prizes Danny Trevathan and now Jerrell Freeman, who agreed to a three-year deal with Chicago on Saturday.

Freeman's deal is reported to be worth $12 million, with half of that guaranteed. The Bears entered Saturday with $34.8 million in cap space available. Freeman made $2.356 million with the Colts last season, after which he and the team weren't able to reach a new deal.

Freeman had 112 tackles, three sacks and an interception in 13 games last season. As a rookie in 2012, he recorded 145 tackles. He has 478 tackles in four NFL seasons as an undrafted rookie out of Baylor.

On Friday, the Bears hosted Freeman and defensive end Akiem Hicks. With the signing of Freeman, Chicago has now closed on another one of its top free-agent priorities at a position of need.

Trevathan on Thursday spoke of his belief in the Bears' direction, while admitting that he was informed there would be more additions to the team's defense.

"We're going to do great things this season," Trevathan said.
