KPIX 5 Poll: Dist. 17 Race A Dead Heat Between Incumbent Honda, Fellow Democrat Khanna
(KPIX 5) -- If the election were held Monday, the race for California's 17th Congressional District would be a dead heat between incumbent Mike Honda and challenger Ro Khanna, according to a new poll.
A SurveyUSA poll conducted for KPIX 5 two weeks before the election shows Democrat Honda would get 37 percent of the vote, while fellow Democrat Khanna would get 35 percent.
The two percent difference is within the survey's 4.2 percent margin of error.
However, a substantial number of voters - 28 percent - are still undecided, according to the poll.
Early voting is already underway as Honda seeks his 8th term. The SurveyUSA poll shows Khanna leading among Asian Americans who are a majority in the District encompassing Silicon Valley, while Honda leads among whites, blacks and Hispanic-Americans.
The poll also shows Honda leads among Democrats, moderates and liberals. Khanna leads among Republicans, Independents and conservatives.
SurveyUSA interviewed 650 registered voters from the 17th Congressional District from October 16 through October 19. Of those interviewed, 579 were determined to be likely to vote on or before the November 4 election.
