U2 At Fenway Park? Boston Mayor Marty Walsh Hopes So
BOSTON (CBS) – Will U2 be the next major band to play Fenway Park?
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh hopes so because they're one of his favorite bands.
But he told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 there's not much he can do about making it happen.
"It's going to be a lot of work to get U2 to Fenway and I don't think I can get them there. It's going to be people who do this for a living," he said Monday.
Walsh's wish was first reported by the Boston Herald, but the mayor's office issued a statement Monday saying that story was "taken out of context as the Mayor was making a joke,"
"Mayor Walsh did not announce that he was taking active steps to bring U2 to Fenway, and his trip to Ireland has absolutely nothing to do with this idea. Mayor Walsh is not a concert promoter," spokesperson Kate Norton said in a statement to WBZ.
Walsh said he's seen U2 live four times and he was hoping to see them on his upcoming trip to Ireland, but they won't be there.
The mayor leaves for Ireland Thursday on a trip that will be a mix of business and pleasure.
"The first few days of the trip is for me to go back to see my family and my aunts and uncles and cousins. It's been kind of, I've been getting a lot of requests to go to Ireland since I got elected Mayor of the City of Boston. They kept a very close eye on this race in Ireland because of my ties, my parents coming from Galway."
Walsh said he'll address the city councils in Galway and Belfast.
He's also hoping to visit Primark, the Irish clothing retailer based in Dublin. It will open its flagship American store in Boston next year at the former site of Filene's in Downtown Crossing.
