LAUSD Cuts Ties With MISIS Contractor

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Unified school district has cut ties with a contractor that provided services connected with student information system that has caused headaches for school administrators district-wide, officials said Thursday.

The My Integrated Student Information System (MISIS) was implemented by district officials at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year to comply with a lawsuit settlement to make information, such as student attendance, schedules, and grades readily available to parents.

Less than a week after Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Ramon Cortines unveiled plans to fix any problems created by the troubled student record system, the district announced Thursday it had terminated its contract with consultant Bria Jones, according to LAUSD spokesperson Ellen Morgan.

The termination is effective starting at the close of business on Oct. 31, Morgan said - eight months before the contract totaling over $561,000 was set to expire.

Two separate documents provided to CBSLA.com - a contract (PDF) dated June 5, 2013, and an amendment (PDF) dated April 8, 2014 - apparently show Ms. Jones was hired for two payments of $280,000 to perform work on the MISIS system.

It was not immediately clear how much of that total the LAUSD ultimately paid or will pay Jones.

The district also did not clarify whether the MISIS system would continue to be used or replaced with a new one altogether.

The system has had a variety of problems, including scrambling students' schedules and affecting their transcripts.

The LAUSD said technology teams were working to fix any and all remaining issues and a support staff, which includes retired counselors, principals and assistant principals, will assist schools by reviewing transcripts and help with a master scheduling of classes.

The district will also communicate with colleges to make them aware of official transcripts that may be incorrect as well as establish a hotline in each Educational Service Center to record student concerns and follow up on any further issues.
