3 Injured In Costa Mesa Street Racing Accident

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — Two adults and a 10-year-old boy were recovering from injuries Tuesday after their vehicle was hit by a SUV involved in a street race.

A Mercedes Benz SUV and a truck where racing around 10:30 p.m. Monday when the SUV ran a red light at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and West Wilson Street in Costa Mesa, police said.

The Mercedes hit a car carrying the two adults and the child before it crashed through a residential fence.

The boy suffered head injuries and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

All three victims were transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with non life-threatening injuries.

Jeff Bannon recalled hearing the crash just outside his home.

"I'm sitting watching television with my wife and my oldest son and the next thing was just like an explosion... It sounded like they actually ended up in our driveway," he told KCAL9's Michele Gile.

Detectives tell Gile the SUV was driven by a 21-year-old woman who was questioned at the scene.

She was not arrested. However, an investigator said she will likely face charges of reckless driving and street racing.

Drugs nor alcohol were detected on the woman.

The driver of the truck fled the scene.
