Gov. Scott Unveils Spanish Campaign Ad & Website

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Governor Rick Scott is getting a head start with Hispanic voters with the launch of new television ads which address viewers in Spanish. The Governor has also launched a Spanish language website as he runs for re-election.

"A governor that is reaching a Spanish community is a governor that's going to have a lot of popularity," said voter Yohann Kurzweil.

Governor Scott is hoping these targeted ads will increase his popularity with Hispanic voters.

His main message is jobs.

Job creation is still a big concern with not only Hispanics, but many Florida voters.

"To me jobs, because my parents just moved here and they haven't found jobs, that have like 5 months here and they haven't found anything," said first time voter Valeria Lopez.

"He's got to change people's minds about him," said Charles Zelden from Nova Southeastern University.  "He's got to stop being "Governor Valdemort."

Zelden said Scott has to overcome negatives.

He figures these new ads could help him do that by focusing on Florida's improving economy.

"If he does get people equating, Florida turns around economically and it was the Governor who promised it and he came through, that gives him a platform to run on in the General Election that can be very, very successful."

The way Zelden sees it, Democrats Charlie Crist or Nan Rich, whoever gets the nomination, will get more support from Florida's Hispanic voters.

He said Scott doesn't need a majority of them, just a small percentage.

"What Scott is gambling on is, "If I can just shave 5%, 10% off the top of the Hispanic voters and have them vote Republican instead of Democratic, that may be the difference between winning and losing."

That ad begins running in South Florida on Wednesday as well as Tampa Bay, Orlando and the Fort Myers area.
