Rookie Andre Williams: 'Giants Are The Real New York Team'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Andre Williams is just a rookie, but he is clearly of the New York mold.

He hasn't even played a meaningful snap yet, and already he's trash talking.

The Giants will play the Jets in a preseason contest on Friday night, and the running back is calling out Gang Green ahead of the "Battle for New York."

"I think the Giants are the real New York team," Big Blue's fourth-round pick said on Tuesday, according to the New York Post.

Rex Ryan was asked about Williams' comment during his meeting with the media on Wednesday. As expected, the Jets' head coach took a measured shot back.

We're assuming that Jets fans won't take too kindly to that statement either.

It's hard to argue, however, as the Giants have won two Super Bowls since 2007. The Jets, meanwhile, have missed the playoffs three consecutive times and haven't won the Lombardi Trophy since 1969.

"This is my first year, and I'm not too sure about what's going on with the rivalry thing," Williams told the newspaper. "But there's definitely a different feeling this week than last week. I'm just trying to buy into it."

The Boston College product has seen plenty of playing time thus far this preseason. In three games he's rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries, scoring one touchdown.

Considering the uncertainty at running back -- David Wilson has retired and Peyton Hillis is hurt -- Williams might just get a chance to prove himself this season.

The Giants have won their first three preseason contests and the Jets have won their first two. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium on Friday night is set for 7:30 p.m.
