View: Breakdown Of Cubs-White Sox Fandom Lines By Chicago Neighborhoods
(CBS) A collaboration between Facebook and the New York Times has turned up a fascinating map that breaks down the geography of MLB fandom.
Facebook provided information from people's preferences and interests to the New York Times, which then aggregated it and created a map that details fan lines along zip codes -- the most detailed map to date on the subject.
The Cubs -- as you'd expect -- have majority support across the majority of Chicago's neighborhoods, but it's interesting to see where the dividing north-south border lies: It's roughly just north of the Eisenhower Expressway. The White Sox's main territory lies in the south suburbs. The Cubs control most of the the northern half of the state before the Cardinals have the majority of support in the southern half.
The Cubs also have a great deal of support in Iowa, surely in part because their Triple-A Iowa Cubs play in Des Moines.
In Lakeview, where Wrigley Field is located, 44 percent of residents are Cubs fans, while 28 percent are White Sox fans.

Helped by the charm of their field and by WGN's national broadcast reach, the Cubs have always been the better-loved of Chicago's two teams. But the White Sox — unlike the Mets or the A's — do have a patch of their own territory, on the city's South Side and into the southern suburbs. Interstate 290 (the Dwight D. Eisenhower Expressway) is a rough guide to the border: Know whether you're north or south of it before you put on your hat.
