Mini Parks Popping Up Around Philadelphia For Annual Event

By Tim McLaughlin and Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're having trouble finding a place to park today, it's probably because today is "Park(ing) Day."

"The idea is to take up a parking space that a car would usually use and occupy it with a park," explains Danielle Denk (kneeling down at left in photo), one of many people setting up mini parks today all over town.

She was setting up a dog park on Walnut Street, between 16th and 17th.

Denk says that in addition to highlighting the importance of green and pedestrian-friendly urban spaces, her group -- the Trust for Public Land -- is spreading the word about their linear playground project in Gray's Ferry.

"It's going to be really transformative," she tells KYW Newsradio.

This is an international event, and the seventh year it's been done in Philadelphia.  More than 50 "parklets" are expected to pop up throughout the city.
