Your Chicago: Apollo Chorus

(CBS) – One hundred forty-three years ago, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago started belting out beautiful music for the citizens of this city.

CBS 2's Kate Sullivan reports.

The oldest musical group in the city was formed a year after the Great Chicago Fire, as a chance for volunteer singers to come together and do something they loved.

That was in 1872. Today, the chorus is filling the same need.

"I have been performing music or singing or dancing acting since high school," says new member Chris Shewchenko. "I cannot think of not doing it. It's just part of me."

From Handel's "Messiah" to Schubert to the Beatles, the group tackles it all and tries to constantly improve on their last performance.

Members are all volunteers. In fact, they pay dues to be a part of this history.

The Apollo Choir will be offering a free concert to the public on Nov. 2 at St. John Cantius Church. If you can't make that one, they have two Christmas concerts in December. For more information, click here.
