Philadelphia Man Accused Of Nazi War Crimes Has Died, Lawyer Tells CBS3
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – An elderly Philadelphia man accused of Nazi war crimes and ordered to stand trial in Germany has died, his lawyer tells CBS3.
Eighty-seven-year-old Johann Breyer was accused of being a Nazi "Death's Head Guard" at Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp. The camp is responsible for murdering more than 200,000 Jews during World War II.
Breyer, who had been hospitalized recently, was granted bail Tuesday by a Philadelphia judge -- a decision that reversed a previous ruling denying bail.
Early Wednesday, Breyer was ordered to be extradited from the U.S. to Germany to stand trial for mass murder; however, his lawyer, Dennis Boyle, tells CBS3 his client passed away overnight at Jefferson University Hospital.
