Women's College Basketball Player From Hazel Crest Killed In Michigan Crash

(CBS) -- Two students at Eastern Michigan University, including a basketball player from south suburban Hazel Crest, were killed in an automobile accident early Sunday morning in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

According to the Washtenaw County sheriff's department, a vehicle being driven by Shannise Heady, 21, veered over the center of the road and collided with another vehicle at around 1 a.m. Sunday.

A passenger in the vehicle, fellow EMU student 23-year-old Jordan Hopkins, was also killed. The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Shannise Heady graduated from Hill Crest High School in Country Club Hills.

In a statement on EMU's website, Women's Basketball Coach Tory Verdi said, "No words can describe the feelings right now as we are truly devastated to learn of her passing. Shannise was not only an inspiration to all of us, but she brought energy and liveliness to our team. She was a true joy to coach and has left an everlasting impression not only on me but the rest of our team as well. She will be missed greatly."

University President Susan Martin called it a "tragic loss."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to both Shannise's and Jordan's families and the entire Eastern Michigan University community," she said in a statement.
