Denver Records First 70 Degree January Temperature In 6 Years

DENVER (CBS4) - It's not uncommon to see a mid-winter thaw in Denver with temperatures climbing into the 50s and 60s.

But its not every year that thermometers hit 70 degrees in January.

So far today, the temperature at Denver International Airport has hit 71 degrees, just 2 degrees shy of the daily record set in 1982.

The last time Denver hit 70 degrees during the first month of the year was on Jan. 21, 2009, when the high was 71 degrees.

Denver's warmest January temperature on record is 76 degrees set on Jan. 27, 1888.

It was just about a month ago when temperatures in Denver were well below zero while folks in Alaska enjoyed temperatures near freezing.

At 1 p.m. Monday, there was a 112 degree difference in temperature between Denver where it was 70 degrees and Fairbanks where it was 42 degrees below zero.
