Unique Art Program Inside Courthouse In Norristown Singled Out For Recognition

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Tourism officials have singled out a Montgomery County judge for her unique program designed to dress up the walls inside the courthouse in Norristown.
A couple of years back, Judge Carolyn Carluccio was walking through the hallways of the courthouse and noticed the walls were bare and bland. Her idea -- to brighten up the building by hanging artwork created by county residents 55 years of age and older. Judge Carluccio took the idea to the Montgomery Bar Association and Courting Art was born.
"We've been able to decorate the courthouse to bring light and air and a little bit of emotion into the courthouse," Carluccio said, "or maybe relieve some emotion at no expense to the taxpayer."
There are now sixty pieces of art adorning the walls on the plaza level of the courthouse. It's an effort to help reduce the stress associated with a day in court.
"Seniors are an untapped source of great artistic talent and certainly knowledge of the community," Carluccio said. "These are the people who loved Montgomery County, who know Montgomery County and have the talent to really express that love."
Visitors to the courthouse admire the artwork and some have even asked if they can purchase the pieces for their homes or offices.
The Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board presented the judge with a Stellar Award. The program has also won national honors.
