Millions Of U.S. Pets Overweight Or Obese

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Obesity, it's not just a people problem.

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, in 2013 an estimated 52 percent, or 43.8 million U.S. dogs, were estimated to be overweight or obese.

But they are not the only pet with weight issues. The Association says more than half (57.6 %) of all U.S. cats are overweight or obese.

While many pet owners may find their chubby pets cute, the risks they face are not. Overweight pets can suffer diabetes, joint problems, heart disease, high blood pressure and decreased life expectancy, just as obese people.

But if you have an obese pet, there are ways to help.

Pawlates, anyone?
