When It Comes To Marriage, The Bigger The Ring, The Higher The Risk Of Divorce

ATLANTA, GA (CBS) – Diamonds might last forever, but spending a lot on one doesn't mean your marriage will.

A new study out of Emory University surveyed 3,000 married or previously married adults and found that the pricier the ring, the more likely the marriage was to end in divorce. In fact, spending between $2,000 and $4,000 on the ring was associated with a 1.3 greater rate of divorce for men compared to spending $500 to $2,000 on the diamond.

But guys, don't sigh in relief just yet – spending less than $500 on the rock also results in a higher risk of divorce.

Other interesting findings? Pricy weddings are more likely to end in divorce.

Women in couples that spent more than $20,000 on a wedding were also nearly twice as likely to see their marriage fizzle, while spending less than $1,000 on a wedding was associated with a decrease in divorce rates for both sexes.

According to TheKnot.com, the average cost of a wedding in the U.S. was almost $30,000 in 2014. Since the majority of couples probably aren't spending less than $1,000 on a wedding, the results should probably be taken with a grain of salt. Divorces are pricey, and if spending more on a ring or a wedding is an indicator of overall wealth, a divorce might just be easier to obtain for those with more cash.
