Dreaming Of A White Christmas, Metro Detroit? You May Have To Keep Dreaming

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) A white Christmas may be nothing more than a dream in Metro Detroit this year, according to Mark Torregrossa, chief meteorologist for farmersweather.com.

So how big a deal is the proverbial white Christmas to Michiganders?

"Over the years I've found about 50 percent of Michiganders want heavy snow on Christmas and a real white Christmas, the other 50 percent want about an inch on the grass, nothing on the roads and then they never want to see snow again," Torregrossa said.

The latter 50 percent may get their wish for Christmas 2014, he added.

Torregrossa says here in southeast Michigan, there could be a small amount of snow on grassy areas by Christmas morning.

"I think it's going to be what I would call decorative snow showers," he said.

But temperatures will be 35 or 36 degrees by late morning, he said, so any flurries that happen early will disappear with Santa's sled.

However, Torregrossa said outside metro Detroit, especially in the northwest Lower Peninsula, there could be a few inches of snow on the ground by Christmas morning.
