Local Police Officers Attend Funeral For Murdered NYPD Officer

(CBS) -- Chicago police officers are in Queens, New York to honor the memory of two NYPD officers by attending the funeral for officer Rafael Ramos.

Ismaaiyl Brinsley ambushed Ramos and his partner, officer Wenjian Liu, last Saturday. He shot them execution-style then committed suicide.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and 25 other officers made the trip to New York. The reason behind the travel is tragic, but it is also a symbol of unity and comfort.

Friday, fellow officers carried Ramos' flag-draped coffin into Christ Tabernacle Church in Queens.

A local officer admitted the way the murders took place in New York City could take place in our own city.

"The officers were slain in such a brutal fashion in New York could have been any one of us in our squad car," said Chicago Police officer Pat McGrath. "The bad guy got the jump on them and that's an unbelievable tragedy and it's so important that we demonstrate to these officers in New Youk that those are our brothers and we should honor them like we would our own," said officer Pat McGrath.

The officers will present the Ramos family with a $1,000 check courtesy of the Brotherhood of the Fallen, a charity that helps the families of officers who are murdered on duty.

Arrangements for Ramos' partner have yet to be announced.
