Study Shows Most Americans Believe God Rewards Athletes With Faith

(CBS SF) -- A study by a nonprofit which studies religion and public policy shows that a majority of Americans believe God rewards athletes who have faith.

The study also shows one in four Americans believe God has a role in determining the winner of a sporting event.

The nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute provides research and surveys for journalists, clergy and the general public. Its website says it is 'dedicated to research at the intersection of religion, values, and public life.'

According to a survey conducted last week, 53 percent of Americans and 56 percent of self-described sports fans say athletes with faith in God are rewarded with good health and success. 45 percent of Americans and 43 percent of sports fans disagreed, the survey said.

The random survey of over 1,000 adults across the U.S. also found that 26 percent of Americans (27 percent of sports fans) believe God plays a role in determining which team wins a sporting event. About seven-in-ten Americans and sports fans disagreed.

The poll's margin of error was 3.6 percent.
