SF Zookeepers Claim Managers Ignored Safety Concerns About Gorilla Enclosure

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Kabiba, the young gorilla crushed by a hydraulic door, did not have to die, according to five San Francisco zookeepers.

San Francisco Chronicle is reporting allegations that top managers ignored zookeepers' safety concerns about the gorilla enclosure.

In an interview, the zookeepers said the 30-year-old gorilla enclosure had a flawed layout, problems with the doors, and was poorly staffed.

Zoo officials have not responded to the zookeepers' complaints, but maintain the enclosure was routinely inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The last inspection, in January, found no issues with the exhibit.
