With Cold Weather Just Around The Corner, It's Important To Remember To Keep Pets Safe (And Warm!)

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) –  With winter just around the corner, it is important to remember to keep pets warm and safe once the bitter cold arrives.

The Humane Society offers some advice on what you should do if you see a pet left out in the cold.

First and foremost, you should speak out. If an animal is left outside in frigid temperatures, he or she is at risk for hypothermia, frost bite, or worse. Reach out to your local law enforcement and report exactly what you see.

You can also reach out directly to The Humane Society.  It says it is working with a number of law enforcement agencies that recognize of the importance of interventions in certain instances.

In order to protect your own pets you should keep them inside when it is bitterly cold outside, except for short walks. Also, take precautions when outside; sweaters can help keep short-haired dogs warm.

It's important for pet owners to remember, your furry friends feel the harsh effects of winter just as you do.
