Police Searching For Gunman Who Killed Father Of Three Near Bus Stop
(CBS) -- Chicago Police are looking for the killer of a 35-year-old father of three who was gunned down early Wednesday morning at a CTA bus stop, right after he left work.
CBS 2's Jim Williams talked to his heartbroken wife and children.
The victim's family, joined by activist Andrew Holmes, spoke outside their South Side apartment, unable to understand why someone killed 35-year-old Donatello Herrera.
"He was a hard-working man. He was a good father. This was a senseless murder. I don't even know why it happened. It should have never happened," said Amanda Garza, Herrera's wife.
It happened at Ogden and Western. Herrera had just left a Burger King where he worked as a cook. He was shot as he waited for a bus to go home.
"He had just got paid and when I got home today, we were going to get their Christmas presents and put up our tree and now none of that is happening," Garza said.
Sources tell us Herrera was not the intended target. Police are not saying whom the gunman was trying to hurt.
Herrera made the trip home after working overnights.
"That is a bad area over there," Garza said. "I just told him to always be careful…and he would say 'I'm always careful'... but he wasn't safe this time…now my kids are without a father."
Three kids, including Dartagnon, who is soon to finish grade school.
"I'm just so sad because my sister had a performance today," he said. "He was supposed to see it and he won't be able to see me graduate now."
Community activist Andrew Holmes is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. He's urging witness to call police or call an anonymous number 800.883.5587.
