Facebook Activates Safety Check For Orlando Nightclub Shooting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Following the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Facebook set up a Safety Check feature to help friends and family members keep track of loved ones who may be in the vicinity of the incident.

Facebook has been prompting users in the Orlando area to click the "I'm safe" button which then shows up as a notification in their friends' feeds.

At a law enforcement briefing, police had confirmed there are 50 dead,  and 53 injured in the shooting. Orlando Health, one of the hospitals treating victims, is working on reuniting victims with their families.

"I can't imagine a family member waiting to find out what happened to their loved one," said Florida Gov. Rick Scott during a press conference.

Facebook launched Safety Check in October 2014. The feature has been activated in other times of crises including the Nepal earthquake in April 2015 and the Paris terror attacks this past November.

Facebook users can keep track of their friends marked safe and ones who have not marked themselves yet here.
