Monmouth U Poll Shows Trump With 50 Percent Lead In NY Ahead Of April 19 Primary
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Donald Trump is positioned for a sweeping primary win in his home state of New York, according to a new Monmouth University Poll.
Trump currently has the support of a majority of likely voters -- a margin that suggests he could win nearly every delegate awarded by the state, according to the poll.
Currently, 52 percent of likely Republican primary voters in the Empire State support Trump compared to 25 percent who support Gov. John Kasich and 17 percent who support for Sen. Ted Cruz, the poll found.
"If this result holds in every single congressional district, Trump will walk away with nearly all of New York State's delegates," said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The voting on April 19 will be the first time the state has played a meaningful role in the nominating process in decades. New York is a coveted prize, offering the most delegates of any contest left on the primary calendar until California's primary June 7.
The poll findings come a day after Trump's second-place finish in the Wisconsin primary.
Trump's loss to rival Ted Cruz Tuesday deepened questions about the billionaire businessman's presidential qualifications and pushing the GOP toward a rare contested convention fight.
