World War I Vets Remembered In Valley Forge Ceremony

by Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Descendants and friends of the 314th Infantry Division gathered at the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge on Sunday to pay respect to the men who died in battle during World War I.

The rolling hills of Valley Forge are the perfect backdrop for a beautiful ceremony.

Nancy Schaff's grandfather fought with the gritty men of the 314th, and she's here to ensure his story lives on.

"We need the generations to know where they came from do they better know where they want to go in this life and how valuable it is to be a citizen of the U.S.," she said.

She says World War I is often forgotten, but the results were instrumental in the progression of America.

Joel Rentz says the men of the 314th, as well as all those who died in battle, deserve to be honored at least one day a year.

"Whatever your faith is, I mean, say a prayer...tilt a glass to them. It would be very appreciated and we owe them that," he said.
