Argument Between Groups Sparks Shooting Ouside Hilltop Mall

RICHMOND (CBS SF) – An argument between two groups at a Richmond mall around noon Thursday led to a shooting in the mall's parking lot, according to a police lieutenant.

There were no reported injuries in connection with the shooting at Hilltop Mall, which officers responded to at 12:28 p.m., Richmond police Lt.  Andre Hill said.

Hill said two groups inside a store in the mall got into an argument that spilled into the parking lot. Two suspects in one of the groups fired six shots at the other group, striking two vehicles with one round each.

None of the members of the other group, who did not return gunfire, were reportedly struck by the bullets, Hill said.

Both groups fled prior to the arrival of officers and remain at large, he said.

Hill said the incident was never an active shooter situation and the mall was not placed on lockdown, although a nearby school was briefly.

The California Highway Patrol temporarily closed Interstate Highway 80 ramps leading to Hilltop Drive following the incident.

The two shooting suspects were described by police as black men in their early 20s with thin builds and short cropped hair. No other information about the case was immediately available.
