Joe Maddon On Kris Bryant's Historic Night: 'Probably The Best Offensive Performance I've Seen'

(CBS) Cubs third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant's historic game Monday will forever resonate with veteran manager Joe Maddon.

Asked where Bryant's third-homer, two-double, six-RBI night against the Reds at Great American Ball Park ranked in regards to a batter being locked in and performing, Maddon responded, "That might've been the best."

"Just purely, the contact was so loud and so clean," Maddon said Tuesday on 670 The Score. "Even his double down the left-field line was really a clean, well-struck baseball, and the upper-tank shots (were too). Especially in this ballpark, this ballpark really provides a great backdrop for those kind of homers. You remember the All-Star Game here (last year), that's what I was thinking. It was almost like he was taking batting practice in an All-Star Game. He was hitting them that far.

"It has to be possibly, probably the best offensive performance I've seen."

Bryant's 16 total bases were a franchise record and three off the MLB record. He also became the youngest Cub to ever hit three homers in a game and the first player in the modern era to hit three homers and two doubles in a game.

Listen to Maddon's full interview with Matt Spiegel and Jon Greenberg below. He also discusses Bryant's swing plane and the work he's done to improve at the plate.
