No Arrests Made In Shooting Of Teen In Austin

CHICAGO  (CBS) -- Chicago's had more murders so far this year than New York and Los Angeles combined. And this has been the deadliest August in nearly 20 years.

CBS2's Jim Williams reports on the latest victims, a boy shot to death the day before his 17th birthday, and another, who was wounded in that shooting, but being treated at John H. Stroger Hospital. He is expected to recover.

Elijah Sims, however, murdered one day before his 17th birthday, was no mere statistic, his anguished aunt said outside Stroger Hospital Tuesday.

"We love him," she said.

Sims, returning to his old neighborhood, and a 15-year-old were shot last night here in the 5500 block of west Quincy on Chicago West Side.

"He was just hanging out, having some fun. But someone came and started shooting. Took off running," the aunt said.

His mother had moved the family to nearby Oak Park, where he was a student at Oak Park and River Forest High School.

A crisis team talked to Sims' classmates, the school said.

"We're just very sorry to hear that happened to him," said Sergio Cepeda, general manager of the Oak Park grocery store, where Sims had a part time job.

"He was always willing to help around their store," Cepeda said.

Police say Sims had no gang affiliation. His aunt called out his killer and gunmen throughout the city.

"Please, please stop the senseless shooting."

No arrests have been made. Police say detectives are reviewing video from the scene of the shooting.
