Singer Chris Brown Arrested On Assault Charge After Confrontation At His House

TARZANA (CBSLA.com/AP) — Singer Chris Brown was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a confrontation with a woman at his house in Tarzana that police said included a gun.

Around 3 a.m., officers received a call for help from a woman standing outside of Brown's residence, located in the 5000 block of Corbin Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to TMZ, the singer is suspected of threatening Miss California Regional 2016 Baylee Curran with a gun after she refused to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Police responded to the scene and surrounded the multimillion-dollar mansion, urging Brown to speak with authorities about the incident.

During a news conference about 12:50 p.m., the LAPD said it was in the process having a search warrant served on the home, and that all the occupants of the residence were first being removed so officers can conduct a "protective sweep."

The singer said on Instagram he would stay in his home until the officers entered with a search warrant. Brown emerged from his home at about 2:30 p.m. to speak with an officer.

Earlier in the morning, officers were seen escorting a woman from the home and into a police cruiser.

Neighbors told police they heard screams for help around the same time officers responded to the scene.

Throughout the afternoon, several of Brown's associates descended to the street below Brown's estate. They declined to identify themselves or answer questions from the media about what occurred. In some instances, the men were belligerent, flashing obscene hand gestures and grabbing recording equipment.

The Grammy-winning singer has had multiple run-ins with law enforcement. He spent six years on probation after pleading guilty to attacking his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. Last year, he completed his probation in that case last.

In 2013, Brown struck a man outside a Washington, D.C., hotel and was charged with misdemeanor assault. The singer was ordered into rehab but was dismissed from the facility for violating its rules.

Brown spent 2½ months in custody, with U.S. marshals shuttling him between Los Angeles and the nation's capital for court hearings.

In another incident while in treatment, Brown was accused of throwing a brick at his mother's car after a counseling session. It came after Brown completed court-ordered anger-management classes.

Ramirez said that robbery-homicide detectives were called to the scene due to the high-profile status of the homeowner, referring to Brown.

"Don't know if his history of violence has anything to do with it, but we just want to do everything thoroughly and properly so we make sure we do everything in the legal realm of our job," Ramirez said.
