The Bernstein Brief: Texans' Loss Can Make Bears Fans Feel Even Worse

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) Torture week for Bears fans just keeps on delivering, and we're not even done with September.

If you're keeping track, the opening loss in Houston was followed by a big buildup to the home opener, an expected bounce-back against a rookie quarterback with the nation watching. All anybody saw was a disjointed and uninspired effort in which John Fox's team was largely non-competitive.

And now one-third of the roster is hurt.

It was a greater letdown in part due to the context of opponent, remember. The thinking was: Sure, it's tough to beat a talented playoff team like the Texans in their building, but the rebuilding Eagles would be ripe for the picking. So not only was the latter proved false, we now have to re-evaluate what the former meant.

The Texans were clowned by the Patriots in Foxborough on Thursday night, their vaunted defense surrendering 27 points to a makeshift collegiate offense run by a guy making his first NFL start. The same offense that ran up 344 yards and converted 12 third downs on the Bears not only didn't score Thursday, it couldn't cross midfield for nearly three quarters, all this against a team missing multiple starters.

Leave it to the Bears to find new and interesting ways to make you think less of them.
