Chicago Half Marathon Raises $200K For Charities

CHICAGO (CBS) -- More than 15,000 people turned out to the 20th Annual Chicago Half Marathon and 5K in Jackson Park Sunday.

Organizer Dan Lakin says it's not just about fitness and getting those medals, the race benefits several charities, CBS 2's Lionel Moise reports.

"We have about 30 different charities out here, different causes. Everything from Team World Vision for clean water in Africa," Lakin said, "... Breast Cancer Foundation to the Team to end AIDS, HIV."

He says the most exciting thing for him as an organizer is getting to see everybody cross the finish line.

There are people from 47 countries and all 50 states represented at the Chicago Half Marathon. Top finishers in this year's half marathon distance included Alan Peterson and Jamie Hershfang, of Chicago. Daniel Lindbloom of Evergreen Park and Hannah Schaap of Munster, Indiana took first place in the Life Time 5K.

For many of the participants, it's a tune-up to the Chicago Marathon next month. Official participant results are available at the Chicago Half Marathon website.
