Chicago Cop Opens Her Heart And Home To Young Mom

(CBS) – Normally, the first day of college isn't a big media event, unless the student is a celebrity or high-profile person. Alante Williams is neither, but her life-changing story could make for a great movie.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports.

Walking into Olive Harvey College as a freshman is a dream come true for Alante Williams, but she knows she didn't get here on her own.

She credits her high school principal, biology teacher and especially her school resource officer, Vivian Williams.

They all encouraged the single mother of two to finish high school and go on to college.

In January, it looked like that might not happen after Alante's mother died, leaving her without a home or family support.

"I didn't know how Alante was going to make it. (I) didn't want to see her on the street. Didn't want to see her in a group home. Wanted her little girls to have a chance, so I let God lead me," Officer Williams says.

She says God led her to not only help Alante at school, but to take her and her daughters -- ages 2 years and 8 months -- into her home.

"I wouldn't be nowhere" without Officer Williams' help, the student says.

Alante is studying child development.
