6-Year-Old, Caught In Hail Of Gunfire, Back Home With Family

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mahaj Brown, or Haji as he's affectionately known, is just like any other inquisitive 6 year old; a vivacious little boy with an infectious smile and loving spirit.

But these moments of innocence are interrupted by a vivid recollection of the shooting that left him riddled with bullets. "We heard the gunshots and my Goddad hid me behind the hospital. We got caught in the gunfire," Mahaj said.

On August 11, Mahaj and his Godfather were caught in a hail of gunfire during a gun battle between suspects in the 5500 block of West Clarkson Street in East Germantown. Mahaj was in the passenger seat of the car.

"I'm just scared about other people shooting other people," he said. Mahaj was shot 10 times. Now after more than a dozen surgeries, and extensive rehabilitation at Shriners Hospital, he's back home with his mother Laprea Brown.

"I'm feeling better now that I'm out of the hospital," he said.

"I'm just happy that he was able to come home and be able to start school and be around his friends and family," his mother told Eyewitness News.

He's learning to navigate his new wheelchair and learning to adjust to a bullet shattered leg and arm. He even let me sign his cast. A young life was forever changed by minutes of senseless violence.

"That's my superhero," Brown "He gives me courage when I think about what he's been through."
