Top Hiking Trails In Philadelphia

As the weather heats up and nature's colors reach their summer peak, hiking the trails near Philadelphia may be a great way to get out and enjoy the scenery. Read below to find a list of hiking and walking trails near the Philly area where you can work up a sweat or just enjoy the view.

Near Allentown, trail lovers will find the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. This hiking trail is just about an hour and a half from Center City Philadelphia. You'll surely enjoy the sights and sounds of the area. This trail is especially beautiful in the fall when a variety of birds migrate to the area, including eagles, falcons and more. There is a lookout trail where visitors can enjoy their hike and look out over the terrain's wonderful beauty. There is also a River of Rocks trail that has a four-mile loop. The Perkiomen Trail is a 20-mile route in Montgomery County. The trail spans from Oaks to Green Lane Borough. The route does connect to the Schuylkill River Trail and the Audubon Loop. Hiking visitors can expect to enjoy access to historic parks like Lower Perkiomen Valley Park and Green Lane Park. Also, if hikers are looking to extend their trail, they can shift onto the local Skippack Township trail and head to Evansburg State Park. Visitors are allowed to ride their bikes or even bring out their horses in addition to jogging, walking and hiking.

Located just beyond Philadelphia, Green Ribbon Trail runs 12.6 miles from Parkside in Upper Gwynedd to Stenton Ave in Whitemarsh. This trail also includes Parkside Place and Fort Washington State Park. Protected by the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association for over 50 years, visitors can expect to see all types of wildlife along the trail. Hikers can expect to enjoy the natural life around the area and tailor their walk to make it as simple or taxing as they'd like it.

The Forbidden Drive is a part of The Wissahickon Valley Park Trail. It is an urban hiking trail that is seven miles in length and though is a short hike, it's a pretty great find in the Philadelphia area. As a haven in the city, it has several paths with gravel and stones throughout. This trail is well traveled alongside the Wissahickon Creek, and very friendly to folks looking to hike, ride their bike or take a simple walk. Visitors can access the Forbidden Drive from the Falls Bridge and Chestnut Hill.

The Pennypack Creek Trail is an 11-mile trail just outside of Northeast Philadelphia. It is guarded by the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust in Huntingdon Valley, PA. The trail is open to the public all year long for enjoyment and has a plethora of events planned throughout the year. This summer you can expect yoga hikes and morning Tai-Chi.
