Residents Near Hazeltine Renting Out Homes For Ryder Cup
CHASKA, Minn. (WCCO) -- Homeowners who live near Hazeltine National Golf Club are cashing in on the Ryder Cup coming to town. Hundreds will pack up their homes and move out so that renters can move in for the week.
People are making anywhere from a couple thousand dollars to tens of thousands.
"It's crunch time," homeowner Dave Dauwalter said.
The Dauwalters are living out of boxes, and doing final preparations.
"Every day that I wake up I see more bleachers going up and it makes me very anxious because I'm, 'Oh no, time is ticking and I need to go and I need to clean this and this and I have to get this packed up,'" homeowner Carrie Dauwalter said.
The group of executives staying at their Chaska, Minnesota, home booked it last February.
"They knew that this was going to be special and that demand would be high for property," Dave Dauwalter said.
Dave and Carrie decided if they could get a certain amount, it'd be worth it.
"Our first indication from our broker was probably twice as much as we thought we could get. We jumped on it," Dave Dauwalter said.
In exchange for cleaning out their home, buying new beds, sheets and relocating for the week, the family will add tens of thousands to their kids' college fund.
A handful of homes in this neighborhood are rented. The Olsons' went for a thousand dollars a night.
"We have to take our pictures and we're renting our house so groups are going to stay in our house," 6-year-old Kensie Olson said.
The Olsons will transform their kids' rooms to make it welcoming for adults, removing personal items and also adding beds.
"We decided instead of staying here during the chaos of the event instead we would rent our house out, take the money and go on a family vacation to Hawaii," homeowner David Olson said.
The perk of a rental at 2770 Autumn Woods Drive on the course that's also for sale is you can watch the competition from the balcony. They're hoping for a last minute rental.
"We've had some offers around the thousand dollars a night range but we really think we'll get that last minute group to come in at $2,500 a night," Micheal Breese with Pinpoint Homes said.
Many of the rented homes are on the golf course, or within a mile or two. Others are eight to 10 miles away, so people all over are reaping the rewards.
