Student Stabbed Outside Brooklyn High School
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A student was stabbed outside of a Brooklyn high school Thursday afternoon.
CBS2's Ali Bauman reports it all started with a fistfight between two students at William H. Maxwell Career and Technical Education High School on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York.
Police said the two boys continued their fight outside, around 3:15 p.m. when school was letting out. That's when one of the 17-year-old students was stabbed in the upper left torso, possibly collapsing his lung.
It's unclear if the student who was stabbed went back inside the school, but some students said they saw puddles of blood on the hallway floors. The students were then immediately ushered into the auditorium where they sat for about 30 minutes with teachers and police.
Renee Smith, a grandmother who was coming to pick up her grandson, said the boys were fighting on the roof of her car.
"I'm sitting here waiting and then the kids start running. And then these two boys, they start fighting and they push the car back. I was scared they were going to hit the car behind me, but it didn't," Smith said. "But they were fighting, and they rolled and then one knocked the other kid down in the street. And then they ran that way and then next thing I know I saw all the cops coming and that was it."
Police said they do not believe this was gang related.
"We usually don't have any acts of violence of that nature in that school, so it was very surprising that happened," Councilman Rafael Espinal told 1010 WINS' Andrew Falzone.
The student who was stabbed is recovering at Kings County Hospital.
He was described as a mild-mannered junior, Falzone reported.
There are currently no arrests.
