President-Elect Donald Trump: 'I Promise You, I Will Not Let You Down'

NEW YORK, N.Y. (CBS) -- It didn't go the way the polls said it would as Donald Trump became the President-Elect after a very long election night turned morning.

Introduced by Vice President-Elect Mike Pence, Donald Trump descended from a balcony, into the Midtwon Manhattan ballroom, to announce to the crowd that he had just taken a call from Hillary Clinton:

"She congratulated us – it's about us – on our victory. And I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard fought campaign. She fought very hard."

He also added that "we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country."

Trump addressed supporters, first noting the importance of unifying the country after the contentious campaign season.

Trump opponents wondered about what a Trump White House would mean for the United States' reputation on the global stage. Trump assured those in the room that America would "get along with all other nations."

"We will get along with all other nations, willing to get along with us. We'll have great relationships, we'll have great great relationships."

Trump thanked several of his supporters including Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Reince Priebus and his vice president Mike Pence.

"It's my honor. It's been an amazing evening and two year period and I love this country. Thank you," Trump said.

"It's been what they call an historic event," Trump said. "But, to be really historic, we have to do a great job and I promise you I will not let you down."
