Best Places To Buy A Thanksgiving Turkey In Philadelphia

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it's time to talk turkey. If you're tired of those frozen grocery store birds that come with the pop-up timers that never work, we've got the inside scoop on fresh, free-range varieties that you can buy locally. Pre-ordering is key, but that sure beats thawing a birdzilla in your fridge for a week. Read on for five of the top spots to buy a Thanksgiving turkey in the Philadelphia area.

From farm to table: That's the concept of this non-profit organization that's dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture in the Philadelphia area. Naturally raised turkeys and turkey breasts can be preordered online by selecting the weight range and pickup date, and they start at $3.99 per pound. Turkeys are free of antibiotics or hormones and are raised on four local farms, so buyers can choose from certified organic turkeys from Howe Farm and Bendy Brook Farm,  bronze heirloom turkeys from Koch's Turkey Farm, and heritage breed Bourbon Red turkeys Griggstown Farm. In addition to succulent turkeys, this farm stand also offers other types of poultry, including capon, duck, goose and pheasant.

Philly's prime spot for your Thanksgiving Day main course has been a local staple for decades. Owner Robert Passio has worked in the meat business for nearly 25 years, and he's regarded as one of the top meat and poultry purveyors in the area. So perhaps it's no wonder that his shop is regarded as one of the area's finest retail meat markets. In addition to a full line of meats, fresh poultry is always on the menu at this Reading Terminal Market hotspot. High-quality birds can be found throughout the year, but the stock multiplies just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Linvilla Orchards
137 W. Knowlton Road
Media, PA 19063
(610) 876-7116

Just a short drive outside of the city will net you not only a fresh turkey but a full fall experience. Linvilla Orchards is known as one of the area's most festive fall pit stops (it has a section called Pumpkinland, for goodness sakes), but it's also a great place to pick up a turkey that comes direct from a family-owned Chester County family. Linvilla's turkeys are never frozen or caged and they are free of growth hormones and preservatives. And the best part is these birds can be ordered right along with fresh baked Thanksgiving pies, so your shopping can be one stop. Shoppers can call to place an order for a whole turkey or turkey breast, and more than two dozen types of pies and cakes.
