Top Memes Of 2016, According To Google

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Google has released a list of the most-searched for memes in the United States.

1. Harambe. No surprise there... RIP. This gorilla caused uproar on social media back in May when a toddler wandered off into an enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and a worker there shot and killed the animal.

2. Damn Daniel. According to the site, KnowYourMeme.com, the catchphrase and subsequent meme originated from a Twitter video where a teen is complimenting his friend's fashion, specifically his sneakers.

3. Pokemon Go. You'll remember this as the game of the summer that encouraged kids and even adults to go outside and hunt for the virtual monsters.

4. Dat Boi. Know Your Meme says the phrase "dat boi" began circulating in July 2014 but the accompanying frog on a unicycle image started spreading in April.

5. Spongebob Caveman. This meme originated from an episode of the Nickelodeon show "Spongebob Squarepants" that aired several years ago but is still popular today.

6. Michael Phelps. The Olympic swimmer was captured in this pose during Rio 2016. The expression has since been dubbed #PhelpsFace.

7. Making a Murderer. The documentary show was released on Netflix in late 2015 and had many thousands of Americans binge-watching the scandalous series well into 2016.

8. Ken Bone. Bone took the world by storm when he asked Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump an energy question at the Second Presidential Town Hall debate.

Birdman. According to Know Your Meme, the origins of this meme come from a well-known quote by the Louisiana rapper: "Put some respeck on my name."
