Police: 1-Year-Old Seriously Injured In Hit-And-Run In Delaware

NEWPORT, Del. (CBS)--The family of a 1-year-old girl is traumatized after she is struck by a car in Newport, Delaware outside of her home.

"Fifteen minutes before it happened she was running up to me, and wrapped her arms around my thigh," said Jose Rivera.

Rivera was inside a house along Roosevelt Avenue when his cousin's 1-year-old stepdaughter, Leah Perdue, was hit by a car.

The driver that fled the scene was pulled over by police and arrested about an hour and a half later. He was identified as Elijah Meredith.

He is being charged with leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury, failure to report a collision resulting in injury, driving while suspended and failure to have insurance in possession.

Rivera still holds the child's shirt which has visible tire marks on it.

"I'm a hold onto the shirt and show it to him when his trial comes," said Rivera.

The child was taken to the A.I. DuPont Children's Hospital.

Her aunt, Linda Phipps, said she has gash on her head, and fractured skull but is in stable condition.

"She's asleep right now, she was alert. She wanted her grand mother. I had to leave the room because you know she wanted to be held," said Phipps.
