Rocky Statue Will Be Down & Out For 2 Weeks

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Looks like Rocky will taking a few weeks off, and that means tourists will be taking one less selfie for a bit.

Starting Tuesday, Philadelphia's iconic Rocky statue will be off-limits for two weeks.

The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department made the announcement via twitter.

The city Parks and Recreation Department is repaving and rebuilding the perimeter around Rocky, so the popular photo spot is closed to the public for two weeks.

There was a steady line of Memorial Day visitors waiting to snap pictures at the statue.  Some knew it was temporarily closing, some didn't.

Dan Mellbye of Springfield brought his children.

"It's just kind of a rite of passage for the young kids to come in and take nice picture with the Rocky statue and go walk on the steps," he said.

And he's glad he didn't miss the opportunity.

"Now that you told me about it, yeah  I guess we got a little lucky today," he said.

Garrett Gorby of Morgantown, West Virginia made it a point to visit the statue with his family on Memorial Day.

"I love the movie and I love the area around here and Philadelphia's nice and I just thought I'd see- well, they wanted to see it before we left," he said.

Stephanie Phillips of Salt Lake City was unaware Rocky was about to be off-limits.

"We're very happy.  This is our last day here," she said. "We're leaving late this afternoon.  So we're really glad that we made it in, I guess."

At least the Rocky steps, closed for last month's NFL Draft, are open again.
