'Jersey Shore' Star Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino Pleads Guilty To Tax Evasion

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- He's a long way from the "Jersey Shore."

Reality TV star Michael "The Situation'' Sorrentino and his brother pleaded guilty in federal court in Newark on Friday to cheating on his taxes.

They were charged in 2014 and again last year with multiple counts related to nearly $9 million in income from the show.

"What the defendants admitted to today, quite simply, is tantamount to stealing money from their fellow taxpayers," said U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito. "All of us are required by law to pay our fair share of taxes. Celebrity status does not provide a free pass from this obligation."

"Today Michael Sorrentino has come to terms with mistakes he made at a very different and tumultuous time in his life," Sorrentino's attorney Henry Klingeman said. "He deeply regrets his failure to pay his taxes and has spent the last several years turning his life into something positive."

"The Situation'' appeared on all six seasons of the MTV reality show between 2009 and 2012. The show followed the lives of rowdy housemates in a New Jersey beach town.

The Sorrentinos initially pleaded not guilty, but wrote a letter to the judge this week saying they wanted to change their pleas to guilty.

They'll be sentenced next month.
