Mets Promote Top Prospect Amed Rosario; MLB Debut Set For Tuesday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Mets are bringing up top shortstop prospect Amed Rosario and say the 21-year-old will be in the starting lineup Tuesday night at Colorado in his major league debut.
New York general manager Sandy Alderson said timing was decided on about six weeks ago and the team wanted to get past Monday's trade deadline before bringing up Rosario, who is hitting .328 with seven homers, 58 RBIs and 19 steals in 94 games at Triple-A Las Vegas.
Alderson says first base prospect Dominic Smith could be called up soon and "he shouldn't be far behind."
Jose Reyes will see time at second base, and Neil Walker will split time between second and first. Asdrubal Cabrera already has been shifted to third. The timetable for Rosario had been set about six weeks ago.
"The flexibility of our infielders allows us to move some pieces around," Alderson said. "We wanted to get through the deadline and try to resolve some of the position issues that we had."
New York traded first baseman Lucas Duda to Tampa Bay on Thursday for right-hander Drew Smith, and the following day they acquired right-handed reliever A.J. Ramos from Miami for a pair of prospects. On Monday, the Mets sent reliever Addison Reed to Boston for three 22-year-old right-handed pitching prospects: Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista and Stephen Nogosek.
"Looking at 2018, we felt the bullpen was an area we needed to address," Alderson said.
New York did not come close to trading Cabrera or outfielders Curtis Granderson or Jay Bruce, but he said it also was possible deals could come together when players clear waivers during the new waiver period.
In injury news, Alderson said Noah Syndergaard (lat tear) was throwing at about 100 feet and Matt Harvey (stress injury to right shoulder) at about 150 feet, both off flat ground.
He said Sunday's decision to designate left-hander Josh Edgin for assignment was made because "Josh had not been as effective against lefties lately as he had been in the past."
