Police: Man Is Taken Into Custody After 6-Year-Old Shot In North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police say Abdul Holmes, 22, was taken into custody in connection with a shooting that left a 6-year-old boy hospitalized Friday night.
Officials say Central Detectives along with the assistance of SWAT executed a warrant at the Holmes' residence and took him into custody without incident.
Holmes is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault (first-degree felony), violation of the uniform firearms act with no license (first-degree felony), violation of the uniform firearms act (first-degree misdemeanor), possession of an instrument of crime(1st-degree misdemeanor), simple assault (second-degree misdemeanor), and reckless endangerment of another person (second-degree misdemeanor).
On Friday night, gunfire erupted around 8 p.m. near the corner of 24th and Diamond Streets in North Philadelphia.
"All of a sudden, somebody started shooting," said Bernice Beattie, the child's grandmother. "We don't know who. We don't know why. But he just got in the crossfire."
Just a block away, 6-year-old Jaden Sisco realized a bullet had hit him in the left shoulder.
"He just ran in crying, bending down," Beattie said. "I asked him what happened and he said he got shot."
Beattie says the boy was shot while standing outside her home on 24th and Norris Streets. He had been waiting to cross the street with his father and 12-year-old brother.
"Six years old. Even though he was with his father and his brother he got shot, he felt the pain, he ran right into his house and family members tended to him," said Chief Inspector Scott Small, with the Philadelphia Police Department.
Paramedics rushed the boy in critical condition to Temple University Hospital. He's since been transferred to Saint Christopher's Hospital and upgraded to stable condition.
"They have to wait for the swelling to go down to see if they can take the bullet out," Beattie explained.
Family members say the child is resilient and expected to survive.
