Boy, 6, Killed, Grandmother Injured When Hit By Pickup Truck While Walking To School

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A 6-year-old boy was killed and his grandmother was injured Monday morning when a teenager driving a pickup truck struck them in Santa Ana.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports police say the accident happened around 7:40 a.m. when a 17-year-old boy allegedly stopped at the stop sign and turned left on Ramona Drive from Central Avenue.

The 6-year-old and his 51-year-old grandmother were struck by the Segerstrom High School student. The boy's 7-year-old sister was reportedly uninjured as she was able to jump out of the way, witnesses said.

The boy and his grandmother were unresponsive when police arrived and were transported to a local hospital where the 6-year-old was pronounced dead. The woman suffered from multiple broken bones and head trauma.

The teenager, who was driving his 13-year-old brother to school in a grey Ford truck, pulled over nearby.

Resident Franco Del Rio was near the scene shortly after the crash.

"There wasn't a lot of commotion, there wasn't mass hysteria going on until the little girl started screaming," Del Rio said. "That's when I looked out the window of my bathroom and saw the two bodies laying on the ground."

"At this time it's still an ongoing investigation, they're going to interview [the driver] to see exactly what he was thinking, what he was doing at the time," Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. "They would have been in the unmarked crosswalk, now whether he felt that they yield for him, at this point that's what we are looking in to."

The 17-year-old, who was reportedly devastated by the accident, has been turned over to his parents.
